It's Tough

It's tough isn't it?
Knowing that business can be tough is the first step. It really doesn't need to be when you shift your mindset and understand that more than likely it's you that's getting in the way. Whilst you don't intentionally get in the way it's the habits you've created. Through these short VLOGs I'll challenge you to get out of your own way.

Why is it important to have a dream? For me it has always been quite simply because it gives meaning. I have a purpose to fulfil during my short stay on earth. ‘Wow, that sounds a bit far out there Steve’, I hear you say. Well, let me ask you why it is we grow out of dreaming? Why does it get to a point where having a dream is just plain silly. The mere fact that in a book about business I’m talking about dreaming could seem to some as a little odd.

When you first set out as a business owner, whether you started as an apprentice and have been offered directorship, become a partner and gained equity in the business, taken the plunge to start your own business or bought a business. The fact is you will have had a vision of where it was going to take you. From that point, it’s been a slog, bloody hard work, and you’ve just ended up trapped in your business. Actually, nothing more than an employee, with no benefits of walking away at 5.  So what's your Dream?
Vision

A dream doesn’t become reality through magic.
It takes sweat, determination and hard work.

Colin Powell

What part does your business play in achieving the dream, quite simply put is it the means to an end? It’s probably likely your business has formed part of your dream. Clearly, we now need to establish where your business is heading, the part you play, the influence you have and the determination to succeed. Forming your vision will set out the journey ahead. The vision should be almost unattainable, really challenging. It should inspire you to work ON your business and not focused on always working IN it.
If your want to earn more
then
you need to learn more.

Learning is an area so often overlooked. Whether it’s ignorance, arrogance, just plain uncertainty or misplaced pride, one thing is clear you need to invest in yourself. You need to embrace learning, if you’re going to reach your true potential, if you’re going to be the best version of you, if you’re going to live your life to your full potential, if you’re going to achieve your dream and make your vision a reality. One thing is clear with those who have achieved real success in their lives, they have the knowledge and they didn’t start out with it.

In the business context, it’s a simple mantra you need to embrace; ‘if you want to earn more you need to learn more’. So right now, what are you doing to better yourself, to increase your knowledge, improve your own ability and maybe excel your own beliefs?
Failing to plan is merely planning to fail.

Developing and determining your plan will ensure you have the necessary focus on the level of effort and actions required, set within the available resources you have; time, finances, levels of autonomy and the constraints. Interestingly we had a saying in the military, ‘no plan survives contact with the enemy’. The same can often be said within the business environment, although you can probably change ‘contact’ for ‘exposure’ and ‘enemy’ for a ‘client, customer or member’.

The point being you need to have a plan and one which is thought out, written down and shared with the team. Having a plan in your head just isn't good enough. You can't share what's going on in your head or hold your team let alone yourself accountable to it.
Have you got a 'to do' list?

I'd be certain you will be working off a list of stuff to do. The daily grind of working through a list which never seems to get any shorter. Sound familiar? Well there is an interesting angle to take if you work off a list of stuff to do. Take a moment to review your list. Is it employee work or business owner work?

Now the challenge here is if you are doing employee work isn't it likely you're only going to be paying yourself an employee wage?

You need to look at delegation, making sure that employee work is being done by employees. This will then give you the ability to focus ON the business and start doing the high value business owner, leader or executive work.
Have you ever Self-Sabotaged?

Have you found yourself in a business or personal situation where you have sabotaged your own opportunities? It's been you that has undermined your on performance.

maybe you could relate to a business opportunity that has availed itself and rather than asking for what you know its worth you have massively undercut yourself.

Self-sabotage all too often gets in the way of what you absolutely know you can achieve but you decide without rational thought to let it go. This is one of the key factors to getting in your own way. Have utter belief in what you can achieve and what you are worth and go after it with determination and resilience.

Yeah But

Synonymous with Vicky Pollard is Yerr but! How many of you are what I term 'Butt Ninjas'. In other words you have significant limiting beliefs, you'll talk about great ideas, have great objectives set, make great commitment and no sooner that you have verbalised them you'll hit it with a BUT.

It may be you have witnessed this in others. Where you may have offered a suggestion only to be told that it's a great idea BUT!  Well it's time to remove your limiting beliefs stop allowing you or others to through 'BUT' in the way and go for it.

Life is to short for limiting beliefs, so if you are a 'BUT ninja' then stop it and and start to explore the art of the possible.
